42CrMo4 steel grade is an alloy steel for quenching and tempering. Grade 42CrMo4 products are mainly used for the manufacture of machine parts like cylinder piston rod and roller shafts. Steel is made in accordance with the requirements of the DIN EN ISO 683-2 standard (formerly EN 10083-3).
AISI 4140/ 42Crmo4 is the most used quenched and tempered steel, It has an elevated harden ability, good heat resistance, excellent forging and good machinability with machine tools. It can be hardened on the surface or nitried in order to elevate the wear resistance and the fatigue strength.
Quenched and tempered and nitrited cylinder rods can substitute the case-hardened and hardened ones, if they are not submitted to too elevated pressure.
Steel grade 42CrMo4 is popular in the machine building industry and is used to make high-strength parts of compressors, turbines, working elements of heavy ground and underground equipment, and parts of agricultural machines like cylinder rods.

42CRMO4 Heat treatment:
42CrMo4 is alloy steel for quenching and tempering, which has a good combination of strength and toughness in the quenched and tempered condition. After the oil quenching, the steel will be hardened up to ø60 mm bar diameter. The microstructure of larger dimensions is not a fully martensite.
42CRMO4 Hardening:
First quenching heated slowly to 880°C, Then after adequate soaking at this temperature quench in oil or water. Temper as soon as tools reach room temperature. Second quenching heat to 780-820°C, then quenching in oil or water.
42CRMO4 Tempering:
Heat to 205-649°C, then cools in water or oil. normal delivery hardness 18-22 HRC.
