Chrome plating is an electrolytic process that can be applied to regular steel like CK45 ,AISI 4140 4130 4340 steel. Stainless steel 304 and 316 or other materials. Hard chrome plating is used in applications when hydraulic cylinder will subjected to a very high degree of wear, requiring a thicker layer of chrome. The added thickness induces cracks and greater porosity on the chrome surface. The cracks increase as the chrome thickness increase. Further machining, such as grinding, polishing or honing is necessary to improve the hard chrome plated surface.
